5 Reasons For Adding a WordPress Blog To Your Website

I’ve very rapidly become a fan of blogging. Initially, it think it was the instant-publisher capability that attracted me to the ‘blogosphere.’ :) When you think about it, blogs are perfect for writers.

And I am a writer. After all, I’ve written a score of eBooks, hundreds of articles, published one ‘real’ book, and am writing another. You could say I have established my writing credentials.

Having said that, blogs have been a mystery to me for a long while. I confess I didn’t understand the hub-bub, the terminology, and the platform. Then Adam Kayce at Monk At Work got my attention when he transformed his static website into a blogging website. And he did it beautifully. I don’t agree with everything Adam’s done on his site, but I do agree with him that Wordpress is the best choice if you’re going to add a blog to your website.

It got me thinking…and tinkering. I downloaded WordPress (which is free) and uploaded it to a subdomain and started playing with it. I was hooked as soon as I saw how flexible and functional it was. When I discovered themes and plugins (also completely free) I knew it was where I should be.

So I created this blog in WordPress. Then I created a whole website in it. Based on my experiences, I recommend WordPress as a website platform. I’m even getting some materials together to begin teaching a class on getting a WordPress site up and running. Ok, so you know I’m a fan. Let’s get to the point. :)

Here are five reasons why adding a WordPress blog to your site is a must:

  1. Search engines love blogs - because the content changes rapidly on most blogs, search engines take note a crawl your site for updates frequently. That translates ultimately into higher rankings for your site.
  2. It’s the latest technology for hosting articles and podcasts - As a Raving Fan for WordPress, I’ve begun to host all my articles within my blog. I simply label then with an ‘Articles’ category so anyone just interested in searching articles can find them all very easily.
  3. It can boost your number of incoming site links - This is also important for search engines because they take note of incoming links to your site. WordPress even lists all incoming link to your blog / site on the dashboard.
  4. The volume of themes can make your blog look pretty cool - Most do-it-yourself website services result in a site that looks like on. Making use of WordPress themes can give your blog and your WordPress website an appealing look. The theme for this site is called Cleaker - after it’s designer. The theme on my other blog (ProCaseStudies) is called Sleepy Blue.
  5. Updating is a breeze - From upgrading the WordPress software to updating links for web pages, it really couldn’t be simpler. On my old HTML site, if I wanted to change a navigation link, I’d have to change it manually one all 100 pages. It took me all day to complete. With WordPress, you make one change and it effects all pages on your site. Talk about saving time. :)

There a hundreds of additional reasons why you’d want to consider using Wordpress as your website software, but blogging is only one. In another post, I’ll talk about why you want to consider junking your HTML site and adopting WordPress instead.

Hi, Barry,

I agree with you about WordPress. I, too, entered the Blogosphere recently and chose WordPress as my platform.

Since this is my first endeavor into Blogdom, I had no idea where to start. WordPress was recommended, so I went with it.

I found getting started to be simple, and for me it had to be simple. I set mine up in September and am still learning each time I log in.

I bought three of the Dummies books concerning blogging and RSS, though I haven’t started reading the RSS book yet.

I should post two to four times per week minimum, but I find that even twice a week requires a considerable amount of time.

Mike,
Good to hear from you.

You’ve got a good start on your WordPress site. Great way to focus your target audience, too. There’s no doubt about who you serve.

If you have any questions about using WP as a static site, give me shout.

Barry
