The Results: Can Moving Be an Irresistible Experience?
In the last post, I spoke of wanting to make this move an experience that didn’t bring out the beast inside me; if you’ve ever faced a full-move and woke up at 3:42 a.m. dreading all the tasks ahead of you, then you know this beast very well.
However, I decided this time things would be different. I wanted Justin to understand that physical labor doesn’t have to be something we dread, fear, or need to avoid. Rather it’s an opportunity to draw on our inner strength first and our physical second. And here’s how things turned out.
Though we have sore muscles and aching backs (me mostly), we managed to feel positive about each load we carried up the hill to the truck. Each one brought us closer to the end result of being in our new home -something we’ve been looking forward to for a long time.
I think Justin gained a new respect for his ability to pitch in and make a difference. He dutifully sorted through his ’stuff’ and separated out those possessions he wanted to donate to a thrift shop and those he chose to keep. He chose to donate a remote control race-car in perfect condition after he realized he never played with it and it could make another child very happy at the holidays.
In many ways this move was like any other in terms of physical labor and sweat equity. But this move also gave us both an opportunity to look inside and choose a more positive intention and that made all the difference. ![]()
