Why, at age 50, am I going back to school?
May 5th, 2007 by BarryMorris | Filed under Becoming Irresistible. At nearly 50, I’m headed back to school. You’d think that after earning both a Bachelor’s degree and a Doctorate, I’d be finished with school. You might think that after teaching college students for over ten years, I’d never want to step foot inside another classroom. You might even think it a safe bet that after having been a college Dean and President, that I’ve had my fill of seminars, workshops, breakout groups, and speakers.
But you’d be dead wrong.
You see, learning is a life-long commitment. And learning is just what I’ll be doing for five days beginning May 14. The Website Strategy Masterclass by Sean D’Souza and Psychotactics.com is taking place in about ten days in Campbell, California. I’ll be there playing SpongeBob - soaking up every bit of website strategy that ooozes out of Sean.
Of course, if you’re familiar with Sean at all, you know that it promises to be more like a hemorrhage than an ooze. When Sean speaks about strategy, a lot of people listen including me. The class is going to cover a hell of a lot. In coming weeks, as I wrap my head around these strategies, I’ll be sharing what I learn right here.
In medical school and residency we had a mantra of sorts when learning new procedures: See one, do one, teach one. I remember seeing a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and then performing one. (The next day I taught another intern to do perform one. )
In Sean’s masterclass, it’s going to be more like: see one, do one, do it again, then again…then when you’ve mastered it, teach one, then teach another, and another.
If you simply can’t wait for my brain-wrap, you can always get Sean’s home study version. You can find it here. And no, I’m not an affiliate. I just believe in this guy.

Great stuff .. but .. hemorrhage and ooze .. ewwwww!
Blame it on my medical past, Chris. It just ‘oozes’ out every once in a while!
The content is just part of the learning. Watch for the choreography as well
I’m 70 and still spend $5k-$10k a year on courses (not government schools). Learning is a life long process.
Mike, I hope when I’m 70 I’m still as proactive as you.
Barry, I know you are having a blast in Sean’s class even as I type… Sean’s great at DRAWING OUT the best in people.
The root word for education means to DRAW OUT, not stuff in (indoctrinate).
Indoctrination is different from creative study. “Schools,” under the guise of “education,” use rewards and punishments, and repetitive drilling under duress.
Indoctrination implants predictable behaviors and unexamined beliefs that result in manageability, control, and domination (and thus, easy prey for political manipulators, junk science promoters, snake oil TV, tax extortion racketeers, etc.).
Indoctrination kills, REAL education enlivens. More at:

Hey Barry!
It was great meeting you in person, though I had no idea about your medical past. (I still like you lots.)
The masterclass was education at its best. I learned at least as much about teaching as I did about website strategy, and believe me, the choreography is indispensable.
PS: I’m three years older than you, Barry, and in my family that means I get to be the boss.
Now, boss of what…?
Hi Molly,
It’s Saturday afternoon and my head is still spinning! The last two days were unbelievable in terms of the group consulting for Proteges; many of us had epiphanies and moments of pure clarity around our business focus and potential. Other shook out the cobwebs and saw, perhaps the first time, their real business. Like I said, unbelievable.
P.S. You mentioned the age thing during the Masterclass; I still love ya, Boss! Long live Shaboomism!
I trust you’re not shakin’ in your boots any more
