Why Taking a Holiday Is Great For Business
August 12th, 2007 by BarryMorris | Filed under Uncategorized.Taking a holiday (or ‘vacation’ as we Americans phrase the concept) is downright great for business.
I’m just back from an 8 day trip with loved ones to Southern California that included camping, playing in the surf, hiking, a bit of shopping, a lot of eating, and some recreational reading (finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince…now on to The Deathly Hallows).
The best part, however, was the time spent with Justin. He loved Legoland, camping, and hiking along the coastal woods of Big Sur. It was our first time camping and I didn’t know how the Elvis loving, iPod toting, digital generation pre-teen would like it. He LOVED it.
Apparently, Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Johnny Cash sound just as good at Big Sur as they do in Aptos. ![]()
But back to my original point: Taking time away from business is great for business. Here’s why:
- It forces you to focus on something other than business; this is refreshing.
- It immerses you in new surroundings; this is fun.
- It allows you to focus on you and not your business; this is healthy.
The outcome for me has been one quality business idea. It’s probably been trying to get through the tangled neuronal highways for some time. I was simply too busy with other things to listen. Taking the time away and immersing myself in recreation allowed it to come through. And I’m glad I did. I know it will benefit my own business and others’ as well.
John Lennon said… “Life is what happens when we’re busy making other plans.”
How long has it been since you took yourself away from your business? Has it been too long? Take it from me; there’s no time like the present to take that time and spend it in other ways that refresh you, allow you to have some fun, and get outside the business.
